Bouncy Castle History
We've been told by many children over the years that their party was the best because of the bouncy castle! That got us wondering who & when bouncy castles were invented! Here’s what we found out:
There is an ongoing “disagreement” between the U.S. and England about who invented the first bouncy castle
History of the bouncy castle in the UK, well this is what we have heard.
The first bouncy castle was invented in the UK when someone used inflatable tubes blown up by vacuum cleaners which also blew cold air out , they strapped the tubes together and covered it with a tarpaulin and used it to bounce on.
(Later someone thought of an idea to sew the tubes together to make the bottom part of the castle. (Known today as a flat bed).
The walls on a bouncy castle was not thought of until a later date due to the flat bed being unsafe.
The first bouncy castle we know it was made in the uk in a style of a CASTLE, Hence the Name BOUNCY CASTLE!
These Bouncy castles where made in only large sizes such as 18ftx18ft, 25ftx25ft, and even at sizes of 35ftx35ft.
My parents owned one of these when they where trading as MADHOUSE bouncy castles over 30 years ago.
The bouncy castles we know of today, like the (H frame and A frame )styles which are hired in customers back gardens today didn't come about until 1980s
My parents found it impossible to find back then and had to use a local manufacturer to produce bouncy castles in specific sizes which they could Hire in Back gardens, such as 10ft x10ft 12ft x 12ft.
which have become very popular in the bouncy castle industry in the UK and are still widely used to this day.
History of the bouncy castle in the US well this is what they heard.
research shows that in 1959 John Scurlock of Shreveport, Louisiana experimented with inflatable covers for tennis courts. He noticed his employees jumping on the covers. University students in England about 1961 designed a bouncy castle for a fundraising event.
The first inflatable rental company was started by Frances Scurlock in 1968 and in 1976, Frances & John opened the first custom facility for the production & rental of the inflatables.
The first inflatable was called a “Space Pillow” as it was an open top mattress with no sides, in 1967 a pressurized inflatable top was added.
In 1974 columns were added to release the heat created by the fans which inflated the space pillow & top.
There are now inflatable slides, obstacle courses, interactive inflatable games which all stemmed from the original invention.
Bouncy castles have a variety of names including moon bounce, astro jump, moonwalk, jolly jump and spacewalk. They've also been referred to as CIT (Closed Inflatable Trampolines).
Today bouncy castles are found at birthday parties, festivals, church fairs, school fairs, picnics, fundraisers and Christmas parties!
